Wilderness First Aid – April 20-21

Additional details regarding the Wilderness First Aid course in Granville. Dates are April 20-21, cost is $110.

This course differs from the usual first aid course in that it is based on the assumption that help may be many hours or days away as opposed to the rapid response we are accustomed to here in town. It is a two day course with plenty of hands-on practice. If you have not taken it before, be prepared to learn some new things (we will learn when and how to set a compound fracture!) Current CPR certification is a prerequisite (we may be able to do a CPR course first).

There is another course being offered at Camp Oyo (Portsmouth) the weekend of May 15-16. That is the weekend of our caving trip this year.

Wilderness First Aid certification is a requirement for a Philmont crew but it is at least as applicable to our canoe treks, caving, backpack trips, or any activity where we are getting away from civilization. (some of our favorites!) It is equally appropriate for scouts and scouters.

Please contact Mr. Aspery this week if you are interested. This course is being set up for us and we need to know how many to plan for.

2013 Boy Scout Requirement Changes

There are a few changes to the boy scout rank and merit badge requirements that are coming in 2013. Unlike merit badges, modifications to rank requirements become effective immediately upon release from the National Council. If you have not yet had your Board of Review for one of the above ranks, you must meet the new/changed requirements. You can see a list of rank requirement changes below.

New Sustainability Merit Badge to Be an Eagle-Required Option

Starting in summer 2013, when the Sustainability merit badge becomes available, those working toward the Eagle Scout rank may choose to earn either the Sustainability merit badge OR the Environmental Science merit badge. Earning one or the other merit badge will be required. Scouts who have already earned Environmental Science may also earn Sustainability, but only one of the two merit badges will count as “Eagle-required.” The other may count as an elective merit badge necessary to reach the total of 21 required merit badges.

Starting Jan. 1, 2014, Cooking Merit Badge to Be Required for Eagle

Effective Jan. 1, 2014, the Cooking merit badge will be required to obtain the Eagle Scout rank. Regardless of when a Scout earned the Life rank or began working toward Eagle, unless he fulfills all the rank requirements – with the exception of his board of review – before Jan. 1, 2014, he must earn the Cooking merit badge to become an Eagle Scout.

Rank requirement changes for 2013:

  • Second Class – See requirements 3e, 3f, and 3g.
  • First Class – See requirement 4a.
  • Star – See requirement 5.
  • Life – See requirement 5.
  • Eagle – See requirements 4 and 7.
  • Eagle Scout rank alternative requirements

Happy New Year

Happy New Year! It’s time to make your New Years resolution to move along your path to Eagle or to help the others along the way with their journey. Here are some good New Year’s resolutions for Boy Scouts, if you need some ideas…

1. A Scout is helpful. Do something great for a younger Scout and offer to help him with his advancement. Every troop has that boy who, for whatever reason seems to lag behind others, always playing catch-up. He’s the one who sits in the back of the room at the Court of Honor watching everybody else collect their advancement pins and merit badges. For him, your encouragement and direction may be just what he needs to ensure he earns his fair share of the merit badges.

2. Do a good turn daily. Behavioral scientists proclaim, “30 days makes a habit.” Make a resolution to conduct one good turn each day for a month and you’re well on your way to a positive, new routine in your life. After all, good deeds are a core value in Scouting.

3. “I will do my best.” It’s been a busy year and chances are, you have at least one partial merit badge. Re-double your efforts toward finishing any merit badge requirements that you started in 2011. Once you’ve completed all the requirements for those outliers, you can honestly say that you have done your best.

4. A Scout is thrifty. This part of the Scout Law says that you should carefully use your time and property. Why not make a New Year’s resolution to organize your collections? You will feel so much better after those rocks, stamps, insects, pocket knives, coins and other collectibles are properly categorized and accounted for. This way, they will always be presentation-ready when it’s time to show them off.

5. A Scout is clean, and reverent. You work hard to earn those pins, patches and badges for your uniform and sash. Because boys will be boys, your uniform is undoubtedly showing some wear-and-tear from all the fun you’ve had this year. Show some respect for your uniform and make a resolution to reattach or update any loose, tattered or worn patches and badges. As a form of reverence to the American flag on the sleeve, don’t throw the shirt on the floor after your Troop meeting.
